Website hosting and design

While setting up my own web site, the expenses of software and a fast, clean, dependable web hosting service struck me as too much for one small business to support. So I'm sharing the load. In order to pay for all of the above, I've decided to charge small fees for the use of this software and host. You must admit, the speed is stunning. Even the pages with photos come through quickly, and the downloads have so far been equally speedy.

Thinking of starting your own website? If you've already decided on the name, but aren't ready to set things up yet, I suggest that you register your "domain name" now at www.dotregister.com before someone else has the same idea. A domain name is something like "www.foxesfarm.com". Many hosting companies offer to include registration of your name for free, but I was badly burned by this practice. The name is actually owned by them, not you. So when www.featureprice.com went out of business, it took 3 months for me to get control of my name. Could have been worse, if they had gone bankrupt a few days later, I would have already renewed my name through them, and that would have meant a year and 3 months without www.foxesfarm.com. This site brings me two thirds of my income, so I'd have been pretty devastated. Whoever you get to host your website, please make sure that you register it in you own name instead of trusting another. By the way, featureprice.com is back up and running again after stopping service and keeping control of the websites of the businesses who bought service from them.

Prices for my services are as follows:

Web design - $25.00 each page with one photo or logo included per page. $5.00 for each photo taken with my digital camera, $1.00 for each clipart, logo, or jpeg photo provided to me. Maps are also available at $35 dollars, as the map company charges for their use. There is a $10.00 fee for each revision after your approval of the completed site.

Hosting - $15.00 each month, or $120.00 each year. This fee covers a web site with up to 30 pages, and 12 free POP3 e-mail addresses of up to 100MB each. If I have also designed your web site, this will include at least 2 edits a year where I'll look for broken links, etc.

Page on this website with an ad on my home page - $25.00 per page to design, and $25.00 per year for hosting. A larger banner ad such as the one for Proctor Massage is another $10.00 a year.

E-mail - Each e-mail address added after you have approved your website costs $5.00 to set up. This is a one-time fee to cover administration expenses. (OK, it takes me 20 - 25 minutes to open the server account, get it to accept the changes, and send/receive test messages. I think that this is a reasonable charge.) These e-mail addresses are all POP3, and have a limit equal to the most expensive Yahoo e-mail account. (The price I am referring to was checked on 06/24/02. I still think that a Yahoo account is great, as it stays the same for life. Of course, I hope that your website will be lifelong, too.)

High capacity e-mail address accounts - $20.00 per year for each 50 MB of storage. POP3 only. Auto-responders are available for an additional $10.00 per year, and $5.00 for each change to the auto-responding message. That's half the price of Yahoo! And here's something that yahoo doesn't offer. Auto-dumping e-mail accounts empty themselves every month or week, depending on the type of account you choose. Click here to order.

This is a secure web-page, and the only way someone gets their own is to pay you. Plus there are a slew of downloads that you get as soon as your payment is received, so that makes it a sales letter rather than a chain letter.
